A terrific third quarter powered a 44-38 win in Rudyard for the Huron girls last Friday. Trailing 30-25 with 2:55 left in the third quarter, the Hurons used great defense and timely shooting to spark a 9-0 run to end the quarter with a 34-30 lead.
Kelleigh Lamb’s second 3-pointer of the quarter started the rally. Then Lindsey Claus took a pass from Lamb on the left block, faked right and hit a short jumper to knot the score at 30-30 with 1:44 left in the third.
COACH DAVID O’Bryant’s team applied a half-court press, setting up the next Huron hoop. With Brooklyn Idalski bothering the guard at the timeline, Claus picked off a pass in front of the Rudyard bench. Claus snared the ball while heading out of bounds and flipped it to Lamb at halfcourt. Idalski, breaking for the Huron basket, took the pass from Lamb in stride, pump faked a player who flew right by her, and hit the short shot. Rudyard called timeout with the Hurons on top 32-30 with 1:27 left in the third quarter.
Courtney Streich’s steal set up the final basket of the rally, a set shot from the free-throw line from Brenna Hincka.
The 18 points were the best quarter of the season for the Hurons and O’Bryant praised the team’s efforts. Following the rally in the third quarter, Rogers City held on to the lead the rest of the way for its second win of the season.
“Kelleigh Lamb stepped up and hit two 3-pointers in the quarter. We hit 11-of-17 free throws, which is good for us. Lindsey Claus and Rebecca Meredith had eight points and 10 points, which is where we need to be,” O’Bryant said.
THE HURONS used an effective trapping press to build an early lead. Idalski’s third of her four first quarter steals set up Claus to the basket that made it 7-4 in the early going. On the next possession, her fourth steal and pass to Streich for a 3-pointer made it 10-4 with 2:30 left in the quarter.
Rudyard came back to lead 20-16 at halftime before the Hurons rallied in the second half.
Streich and Rebecca Meredith each scored 10 points while Claus scored eight and Lamb and Idalski each had six in a balanced scoring effort. Claus led the team with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots while Hincka added eight rebounds. Lamb led the team with five assists and Idalski had six steals.
Rogers City used an effective full-court press, alternating with a half-court trap to keep Rudyard off-guard.
“Defensively, Rudyard had a lot of different players score, but no one more than seven points. We talked about how to shut down certain players and what it would take. The girls kept them in their sights at all times and the girls hustled really well. We had a little lull in the second quarter to let them back in, but the girls hustled a lot better and really executed well,” O’Bryant said.
THE JUNIOR varsity came away with an exciting 42-37 win over Rudyard.
Freshman point guard Logan Fleming led the team with 12 points. Cassidy Purgiel and Nikkie Radtke had seven while Alexa Quaine added six points.
All eight players who were able to suit up scored in the game for coach Karl Grambau.
The team hosted Cheboygan Wednesday (after press time), hosts Sault Ste. Marie Friday then plays at DeTour Tuesday. The JV game begins at 5 p.m.
