Former Rogers City High School standout Greta Grambau is having an outstanding basketball season. She’s extended her playing days with the Alpena Community College (ACC) Lady Lumberjacks, who are in the midst of a playoff run.
Grambau is the player head coach Bobby Allen counts on to knock down the treys from downtown and has been in double digits in scoring in every game but two.
Her best scoring night was a 16-point performance against conference front-runner Lansing Community College. She had 14 at Oakland Community College and 10 last Saturday on the floor with Delta Community College in town.
“She’s doing well,” said Allen. “She was in a slump here for a while, but she’s coming out of it. She’s back to playing at a high level again.”
Grambau, the daughter of Karl and Heidi Grambau of Rogers City, is averaging seven points a game and is shooting 24 percent from the three-point line.
“She’s my shooter,” said Allen. “That’s her main job.”
She’s made her mark on the scoring sheet, but it’s her hustle that has made fans take notice and cheer her on.
Gary Mischley, who called ACC games on WATZ before heading south for the winter, nicknamed her “roadrunner,” because she never stops running and working hard.
In the line after games, coaches have been stopping her to hold her hand for an extra second to compliment her effort.
“It’s been a wonderful opportunity for her,” said Karl Grambau. “It’s such a positive setting and a good school.”
Greta is taking general classes into her sophomore season and has no specific career plans.
Grambau has an apartment in Alpena, and for good reason. Her practices start at the early hour of 6:30 a.m. She said there’s more running in practice compared to high school, but that’s not a problem considering she was an outstanding cross country runner for the Hurons.
On top of attending classes, playing evening basketball games during the week and practicing, she also has been practicing softball twice a week.
“I like it,” said Grambau of being a part of the ACC program.
Allen said she’s come a long way in two years.
The ACC squad has a mix of northern Michigan’s best basketball players from Marquette, Reed City, to Alpena and Fairview.
The squad is 9-13 and looking at landing one of seven playoff positions. Allen believes the ladies could finish in the fifth spot if they pick up the victories they are supposed to.
And credit a quiet, unassuming Rogers City athlete for being part of it. She is representing the Nautical City as well.
Fans who want to get out and root for Presque Isle County’s lone representative on the hardwood will have a chance over the next two Saturday nights. They take on Schoolcraft College the 18th and Macomb Community College the 25th.
The season started back on Nov. 18.
