Rogers City came back from a 9-6 first quarter deficit to blitz to a 57-39 win over the Onaway Cardinals. In a contest, which often resembled a football game because of its intensity, the Hurons took the lead in the second quarter and locked down Onaway the rest of the way with rugged defense. After Huron point guard Austin Brege gave the Hurons a 12-11 lead with a drive through the lane, Onaway’s Carlos Bautista answered with a jumper from the corner. Then the Hurons went on a 9-0 run. Andrew Freel started it with a shot from inside at the three-minute mark.

Then Chase Grulke, who paced the team with 19 points, snared a rebound and hit a shot. Brege followed that with a bucket and a free throw and Chris Peacock ended the rally with a free throw. With 1:27 left in the second quarter, the Hurons led 21-13 and carried that to a 23-17 at the half. Rogers City came out of the locker room fired up and in a full- court press. That sparked a 13-2 run over the first three minutes of the third quarter. Devin Hilla’s pass set up Grulke for a score to start the rally and Brege’s steal and hoop kept it going. The press fired up the Hurons and took the Cards out of the game.

THE HURONS led 46-24 at the end of the third quarter. “They played hard after coming out a little sluggish, but came out with a little more energy in the second half,” said Huron coach Jesse Streich. Grulke scored 19 points while Brege added 17. For Onaway, Bautista had 14 points and Andrew Perry added nine.

“Any win is a good win. This is our second win of the year so it is good for these guys to get a win. We were a little sloppy tonight. We go to the Soo Friday and we can’t play like this up there,” Streich said. Last Friday a dominating second half powered Rudyard to a 63-35 win over the Hurons. Rogers City led 10-9 after the first quarter then trailed 26-24 at halftime. But Rudyard put it away with a 24-5 edge in the final frame. Peacock, Brege and Josh Vogelheim each scored seven points while Grulke added six. The Hurons hit on 6-of-12 from the line.

IN JUNIOR varsity action, the Hurons defeated Onaway Tuesday and lost a close one to Rudyard Friday. First, Rogers City trailed most of the way Friday before rallying in the second half in a 49-48 loss to the Bulldogs. The Hurons fell behind 12-10 after the first quarter and trailed 26-17 at halftime. Chris Lopez scored 22 and Colton Fessler added 14 points in the loss. Tuesday in the home gym, Rogers City topped Onaway 47-29. Rogers City led 14-8 after one quarter but the Cards knotted the score at 22-22 at halftime.

Lopez had 19 points, Tyler Langoria scored eight points and Alex Darga added six points. The Huron boys are in action Friday at Sault Ste. Marie and host DeTour in a make-up game Saturday. The junior varsity game starts at 4 p.m. Saturday with the varsity to follow.
