Survivors include a son, Richard (Marge) of Atlanta, Georgia; four daughters, Audrey (Charles) Kemerer of Saginaw, Mary (Robert) Wirgau of Rogers City, Susan (John) Rolfe of Topeka, Kansas and Beth Peters of Hurst, Texas; four sisters, Fidelia Hastings, Audrey Gawlik, Alice Wenzel and Anita Pardike; 19 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Henry A. Crooks Sr., 94, of Onaway, died on January 8, 2012 at Tendercare Health Center in Rogers City. Henry, the son of Clayton and Sylvia (DeRosia) Crooks, was born in Ocqueoc December 28, 1917. Surviving are a son, Henry A. Crooks, Jr. “Husky” of Interlochen; daughters, Glee (Myles) Elowsky of Onaway, Charmaine (Tom) Douglas of Presque Isle and Angela Schmidt of Manistee; as well as, 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Jerry K. Cryderman, 76, a lifelong resident of Onaway, died Thursday, January 12, 2012 at the Gadsden Regional Medical Center in Gadsden, Alabama. Jerry, the son of Arthur and Tilda (McManus) Cryderman, was born in Alma December 21, 1935. He married Helen C. Corriveau June 21, 1958 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Onaway.Surviving are Jerry’s loving wife of 53 years, Helen Cryderman of Onaway; a son, Gregory Ward (Carol) Cryderman of Rockford; a daughter, Jeri-Kaye (Don) Mutchler of Indianapolis, Indiana; grandchildren, Alyson and Karman Cryderman of Rockford and Alexis and Kassidy Mutchler of Indianapolis.

After a long courageous battle with cancer, Laura May McDonald, 39, of Pontiac, died at home Saturday, January 21, 2012 with her family at her bedside. Laura, the daughter of Lawrence “Buckshot” and Sandra (Sachs) McDonald, was born in Cheboygan August 19, 1972.Surviving are Laura’s parents, Lawrence “Buckshot” and Sandra McDonald of Onaway; two sisters, Sally (Robert) Carmack of Pontiac (whom Laura lived with) and Barbara (Mark) Hayner of Onaway; a brother, Larry McDonald of Jackson; a grandmother, Dorothy Sachs of Onaway; Great Dane, Nitro; and nieces and nephews Amber, Devin, Chelsea, Madison, Zander, Mark, Thomas, Haley, Trinity, Zavier and Ryker. Born in the Polish community of Hamtramck July 21, 1921, Gerry was the daughter of Anthony Leon and Leokadya (Cybert) Czarnecki. On July 1, 1972, in Fenton, Geraldine was united in marriage to Harold Opalewski. Surviving Geraldine are her daughters, Lorann K. (Jack) Siddall of Kalkaska, Karen L. Hatfield of Gladwin and Robin L. Hatfield of Petoskey; sons, Rusty G. Hatfield of Jupiter, Florida and David A. Dennis, the son of Chapin and Delphine “Della” (Wendorf) Armstrong, was born in Detroit January 16, 1951. On November 29, 1969 he married Diane Trudell in Detroit. Dennis is survived by his daughter, Clairan Armstrong of Detroit; two sons, Dennis Armstrong, Jr. of Onaway and Timothy Armstrong of Detroit; grandchildren Meghan, Raymond, Kailey, and Makayla; a sister, Linda Anderson of Detroit; and his former wife, Diane.
Brewbaker, Thelma Hope

Thelma Hope Brewbaker, age 86, a lifelong resident of Onaway, died at All About You Adult Foster Care Home in Onaway on Monday, December 26, 2011. Thelma, the daughter of Forest and Eliza (Comfort) Porter, was born in Allis Township, just east of Onaway, on March 1, 1925. In September of 1943 she and Lionel Arthur Brewbaker were united in marriage in Onaway.Surviving are her sons, Jim (Cindy), Larry (Sheila), Art and Jerry (Alisha), all of Onaway; daughters, Sherri (Randy) Kramer and Shirley Rhein, both of Onaway; 24 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and her brother, Arden Porter of Onaway.

Robert A. “Bob” Bruning Sr., 69, of Alpena went to be with the Lord December 2, 2011 at home. He is survived by his wife, Susan Bruning, (nee Urban); two sons, Robert Bruning II and Charles (Heidi) Bruning; four grandchildren, Alexandria, Hunter, Ashton and Dawson; five brothers, Tom (Barb) Bruning, Chuck (Peggy) Bruning, Arlo Bruning Jr., Mike Bruning and George (Rebecca) Bruning; three sisters, Lynn (Willie) Crawford, Laurie (Rick) Johnson and Julie (Walter) Bahn. His memorial service will take place at the Beaver Lake Community Church, 9007 M 65 S, Lachine today (Thursday, December 8) at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jack Williams officiating. Prior to working at Boysville (Huron House) and retiring in 1998, he was an iron worker in Detroit out of Local 25. Bob enjoyed fishing and hunting.

On August 18, 1977 Gloria and Robert were united in marriage in Davison.She is survived by a son, Brian Carsten of Montana; a daughter, Tina Carsten of Harrison; three sisters, Delores Dooreneo of Flint, Carolyn Daly of Clio and Anna DeLisle of Hazel Park; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a special neighbor, Brandon Horton and his daughters Shelby and Lexus.

Edward Stanley Palka, 73, of Krakow Township passed away December 19, 2011 at Alpena Regional Medical Center. Ed was born December 5, 1938 in Detroit to Anthony and Sophie (Tusinski) Palka. Mr. Palka is survived by two sisters, Irene Ermert of Burton and Eleonore (Dennis) Duggan of South Lyon. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Friends may visit St. Casimir Catholic Church today (Thursday, December 22) from 10 a.m. through time of Mass at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Arthur Duchnowicz officiating. Mr. Reed is survived by his wife, Ila; his sons, Scott (Amanda) Reed of Owosso, Jimmy Reed of Marquette and William Wingo of Hillman; his daughters, Wanda Wingo Tolin of Alpena and Janice Wingo Green of Hot Springs, South Dakota; four brothers; two sisters; mother, Arlene Rodman; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Rudolph C. Salamino, Sr. “Rudy,” l died at Hospice House in Cheboygan Friday December 30, 2011 at the age of 62. Rudy, the son of Rudolph J. and June (Tilliard) Salamino, was born on July 13, 1949 in Detroit. Surviving are his wife of 18 years, Jeanene T. Salamino of Onaway; a son, Rudy Jr. (Tina) Salamino of Mt. Clemens; two brothers, David (Gail) of New Mexico and Matthew (Beth) of Clinton Township; a cousin, Joe Charboneau of Clinton Township who was just like a brother to Rudy; two stepsons, Andrew (Lisa) Szwast of Shelby Township and Matthew Szwast of Detroit; two granddaughters, Jessica Salamino and Amber Szwast; two grandsons, Matthew Szwast Jr. and Sebastian Szwast, who was Rudy’s best fishing buddy; his mother-in-law, Theresa J. Gard of Onaway; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Elsie Smith; wives, Anne E. Smith in 1965 and Shirley C. Smith in 2009; and one son, Duane E. Smith. Surviving are six children, Allan Smith and wife Joann of Kingsport, Anne “Mitzi” Sawyer and husband David of Church Hill, Tennesee, Brenda Russell and husband Tab of Kingsport, Joel Smith and wife Glenda of Naples, Florida, Tina Clendenin and husband Corkey of Church Hill, and Rose Chamberlain of Rogersville; 15 grandchildren, Michael, Nicholas, Annie, Jason, Jamey, Christopher, Joey, Tyler, Miya, Katie, Jesse, Katheryn, Casey, Emily and Logan; and eight great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Florence “Elsie”; six sons, Jerry (Diane) of Corunna, Tom (Laurie) of Rogers City, Ken of Hawks, Pat of Rapid City, Jim (Shannon) of Belknap and Glen (Lisa) of Rogers City; a daughter, Karen (Terry) Hare of Wyoming; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stanley (Martha) and Clarence; four sisters, Lucille (Ed) Benoit, Evelyn (Tom) Paulus, Angie Borough and Delores (Guy) Dorer; also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five siblings, Martha Abbott, Edward, David, MaryAnn Alverson and Blanche Pilarski.

Russell H. Hayner, 98, a lifelong resident of Onaway, died at home Friday, November 11, 2011. Russ, the son of Samuel E. and Ethyl L. (Hammond) Hayner was born just north of Onaway on May 15, 1913. He married Olive F. Buchanan in Johnstown, New York on May 17, 1937. He will be sadly missed by his three daughters, Judith Bancroft, Margi (Wayne) Berry, and Elizabeth Roat, all of Onaway; his three sons, Russell (Debbie) of Atlanta, Lynn (JoAnn) and Jeremy (Sandy), both of Onaway; as well as 18 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

Minser in Tower.Surviving are Katherine’s daughter, Gail Eldred of Sault Ste. Marie; grandson, Drew Eldred of Grand Rapids; granddaughter, Andrea Eldred of Sault Ste. Marie; and brother, Harry Erratt of Onaway.

Ira William Russell Sr., 90, of Millersburg, died on Saturday November 12, 2011 at Golden Beach Manor in Ocqueoc Township. On June 12, 1921 in Ocqueoc Ira was born to Henry Sr. and Mabel Ann (Price) Russell. He married Esther Hilliker on January 1, 1946 in Midland. They were married for 43 years when Esther died on January 30, 1989. After Esther’s death Ira met Jean Taylor Carter and they were married on March 20, 1993 in Waterford Surviving are Ira’s wife, Jean, of Millersburg; daughter, Mabel Kumpula of Pontiac; sons, Ira W. Jr. (Judy) of Holly, Henry (Patricia) of Pontiac, and Randy (Sherry) of Arizona; stepson, Joe Carter (Lavonne) of Waterford; and stepdaughter, Lynn Carter of Indianapolis, Indiana; as well as, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a special niece, Treva Stoner and her family of Onaway.
