Robert C. Carter Sr.

Robert C. Carter Sr., 86, of Onaway, died at home Friday, July 20, 2018.  Born in Cheboygan May 28, 1932, Bob was the son of August and Helen (LaVigne) Carter.

3018-obit-Carter-copyHe married Louisa “Joan” Dunn November 29, 1952 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Onaway. They enjoyed 51 years of marriage at the time of Joan’s death in 2004. He later married Vivian Comfort-Montie who preceded him in death and April 28, 2012 wed Kathleen M. Conway Weber at St. Paul Catholic Church.

Bob was employed by Presque Isle Electric where he worked from 1971 until 1996 as a lineman and eventually retired as a stock clerk. Strong in his Catholic faith, he was a longtime member of St. Paul Catholic Church. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army serving with the occupational forces and spending 18 months in Germany during the Korean War.  He also was a member of the Onaway George Garms Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5857.

Bob had a love and appreciation for horses. He bred and raised horses for racing, endurance, and show and was a member of the Arabian Horse Association. He enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, was an avid hunter and skilled wood carver.  Bob hand carved everything from horses and trophies to finely detailed gunstocks and pistol handles. When outdoor activities became difficult, Bob found that he enjoyed putting puzzles together and that Wii bowling and the Legend of Zelda video game were a lot of fun too.

An easy-going guy, Bob never had a bad word to say about anyone.  He liked to joke around and was generous. He was a good teacher and a nurturing father to his children.  He taught them to hunt and fish, to be self-reliant, and passed on his love and knowledge of horses.  Bob was a gentle man with a loving heart.
