Carl T. Schaefer

Carl T. Schaefer, 72, of Cheboygan, died Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at McLaren Northern Michigan hospital in Cheboygan. The son of Carl F. and Helen M. (Abrahamson) Schaefer, Carl was born in Cheboygan July 9, 1946 and was a lifelong resident of northern Michigan. He married Theresa Marie Schaefer in St. Ignace May 22, 1972.  She preceded him in death March 12, 2013.

Carl worked on the Great Lakes’ freighters for a time before taking employment with the United Auto Workers Education Center at Black Lake from where he eventually retired. A man who liked to stay busy, Carl took a retirement job working during the summer months at the Cheboygan Golf and Country Club. Devoted to his Catholic faith, Carl was a longtime member of St. Mary-St. Charles Catholic Church in Cheboygan. He rarely missed Mass or holy days.

Carl enjoyed going for his walk early each morning, going to the casino and going out to eat. He and Theresa enjoyed traveling together and visited many cathedrals and shrines throughout the world, as well as visiting Lourdes, Fatima, Guadalupe and the Vatican.  They enjoyed wintering in Florida and spending beautiful summers in northern Michigan. Kindhearted and generous, Carl was always helping someone. He was friendly and loved to talk and tell stories.  Carl was a devoted husband to Theresa and valued his family above all.

Surviving Carl are his two brothers, Hank (Cheryl) Schaefer of Cheboygan and Bob Schaefer (Annie Woodring) of Indian River; sister-in-law, Di

ane Schaefer of Alanson; stepsons,  George Killian of Flat Rock, Edward (April) Killian of LaSalle, Michael Killian of New Buffalo and Patrick (Sharon) Killian of Brownstown Township; stepdaughters, Margaret (Randy) Reynolds of Rockwood and Mary Damico of Trenton; as well as  21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and a good friend and neighbor, Clifford Jewell.

Preceding Carl in death were his parents; brothers, Roger, Ronald and Frederick; a sister, Jill Nancy Johnson; a stepson, John Killian; a granddaughter, Angela Killian; and a great-grandson, Randy Reynolds.

Cremation arrangements were in care of the Chagnon Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Cheboygan today (Thursday, July 26) at 11 a.m.  the Rev. Duane Wachowiak officiating.
