Mr. John J. Tierney

Mr. John J. Tierney, 43, of Midland, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, March 23, 2017, at Mid-Michigan Medical Center. He was born December 29, 1973 in Onaway.

John attended Onaway High School.  He received his bachelor’s degree from Alma College.  He took a job at Deloitte & Touche in Midland, where he became a certified public accountant.  John was then hired into Dow Corning, where he took a job at Hemlock Semiconductor.  While working there, he received his law degree from Michigan State University’s College of Law.  He moved on to the tax department at Dow Corning, then transitioned into the legal department at Dow Corning and most recently Dow Chemical, through the recent merger.  John was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Saginaw and was on the board of directors at the Bay Area Family YMCA in Bay City, as well as serving on the board of directors of the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce.

He enjoyed hunting and his annual fishing trip with family and friends. John was a loving husband and father and cherished the time he spent with his family, especially with his children at their various sporting events and activities.   He loved spending his summers at their cottage on Black Lake.

On August 25, 2001 John married the former Jenn

ifer L. Schisler, and she survives his passing along with their three children, Ellyana age 13, Ayden age 11 and Hayes age 9. John is also survived by his father and mother, John and Helen (Berwanger) Tierney of Onaway; his brother, Josh Tierney of Onaway; and his close family friend, Joe Stranaly (Melissa) of Onaway; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dr. Charles and Sharon (Cederberg) Schisler of Bay City; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Scott (Jodie) Schisler, Todd (Kathryn) Schisler, Toby (Melissa) Schisler and Rusty (Dr. Tessa) Schisler; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

John was preceded in death by his grandparents, John G. and Geraldine (Seymour) Tierney, and John J. and Philomela (Baker) Berwanger. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, at Peace Lutheran Church, 3427 Adams Ave., Saginaw, MI 48602. Officiating will be the Rev. C. William Weis. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m.  John will lie in state at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.  Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for the benefit of John’s children. www.gephartfuneralhome.com.
