Leonard J. Gaynor

Leonard J. Gaynor, 83 of Cheboygan, passed away November 18, 2016 at home. Born May 30, 1933 in Cheboygan, Leonard was the son of Lionel and Edna (Fluery) Gaynor.

In 1951, Leonard graduated from St. Mary Catholic School in Cheboygan. On July 5, 1954 he married Pat Newsome at St. Mary Catholic Church in Cheboygan. On November 21, 1951, Leonard enlisted into the military where he served in the Korean War for the
U. S. Army Security Agency. Throughout his career, he worked as the assistant manager at Straits Area Credit Union, manager at Onaway Credit Union and family loan co-manager. Leonard was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lions Club and VFW in Cheboygan. Upon retirement, he and Pat enjoyed traveling and wintering in Clearwater, Florida. Most of all, his pride and joy was his family.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patricia; children, Timothy (Kathleen) Gaynor of Wichita, Kansas, Monica (Greg) Leis of Cheboygan, Christopher Gaynor and Shirley Cancade of Onaway and Carolee Gaynor of Afton; a special daughter, Veronica (James) Hall and family; grandchildren, Nicole Burke, T.J. Gaynor, Natasha Waters, Brian Leis, Brett Leis, Brandie Schleben and Darbey Gaynor; 10 great-grandchildren; step-granddaughters, Ashley and Cassey; many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dale Gaynor; and his sister, Dona Peash.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, at St. M

ary/St. Charles Catholic Church in Cheboygan with The Rev. Duane Wachowiak celebrating. Visitation at the church began at 10 a.m. until the time of service. A luncheon followed. Burial took place at Munro Township Cemetery following the luncheon.

Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions to the Bishop Baraga Catholic School, 623 W. Lincoln Ave., Cheboygan; or to Hospice of the Straits, 722 South St., Cheboygan.
