Leon D. Van Horne Jr.
Leon D. Van Horne Jr., known as “Van,” of Black Lake, died at Hospice House in Cheboygan Wednesday February 24, 2016 at the age of 88. The only child of Leon D. and Helen M. (Hefferon) Van Horne, Van was born in Herkimer, New York January 20, 1928. On August 22, 1953 Van married Rita D. Mall and they made their home in Bedford, Ohio.
Surviving Van is his wife of 62 years, Rita Van Horne of Black Lake; sons, Tom (Catherine) of Chagrin Falls, Ohio and Tim (Mary Ann) of Gastonia, North Carolina; granddaughters, Shannon and Amanda Van Horne, both of Gastonia, North Carolina, Terri Van Horne of Mt. Pleasant, North Carolina, Rachel (Manny) Guzman of Washoe Valley, Nevada and Nicki Van Horne of Dayton, Ohio; as well as two great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Lettie; and numerous friends.
As were Van’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There was a memorial Mass Monday, February 29, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Onaway. The Rev. Sylvestre Obwaka officiated. Van’s final resting place will be at the Van Hornesville Cemetery in Van Hornesville, New York.
