For the 33rd time since the program began in 1970 the Rogers City Hurons wrestling team has won a district championship.
Wednesday the Hurons traveled to St. Ignace for the team district tournament to take on the Saints. The Michigan High School Athletic Association originally placed DeTour in the tournament as well, however, they chose to withdraw as they have a limited number of athletes.
Starting weight for the dual was 135 pounds. The Hurons voided at that weight and the teams double voided at 140. Rogers City’s Max Kowalewsky won by void at 145 pounds and the match was tied 6-6. Justin Saile lost to Daniel Marsh by decision at 152 pounds and the Hurons trailed 9-6. After voiding at 160 pounds the Hurons trailed 15-6.
Juan Beltran (171) and Quintin Kelly (189) each won by void to make the score 18-15 in favor of the Hurons. Casey Szatkowski won by pin at 215 pounds and Chandler Beland won by void at 285 and the Hurons led 30-15.
From there it was all Hurons with Sam Sobeck (103) and Austin Cook (112) each winning by pin and Tommy Vogelheim (119), Tristan Baller (125) and Andrew Haselhuhn (130) each winning by void as the Hurons took the title 60-15
Rogers City will now move on to the regional round Feb. 17 in Munising. The Hurons will take on Manistique in the first round. Munising will face the winner of the Gwinn district (Gwinn, Iron River-West Iron County and Bark River Harris) and the winners will square off for the regional title.
ONAWAY FELL in the district finals to Charlevoix 54-27. Winners by void for Onaway were Dawson Hilliker (125), Coty Ionetz (140), and Brittany Wolgast (103). Hunter Siles won by pin at 145 pounds and Troy Klein won by decision at 152 pounds.
Both teams will be at the individual district tournaments Saturday. Rogers City will travel to Munising while Onaway will be at Farwell. The top four finishers in each weight will move on to individual regionals in Rogers City Feb. 20.
