Huron sting Hornets with loss in regional finals

A confident Huron volleyball team put away the Pellston Hornets to claim the regional championship. Rogers City took control of the match early and never let up, winning 25-13, 25-18, 25-10, much to the delight of a rowdy student cheering section.

“They played smart tonight, very smart. We are excited to go on,” said coach Jackie Quaine.

Sarah Meredith led the way with 15 kills and 21 digs, and fellow seniors Ally Streich, with 32 assists, and Megan Brege, with 25 digs, gave steady leadership in the win.

“We just try to build up to this time, the tournament time and that is what they did,” Quaine said. “They played smart tonight, very smart.”

Meredith dove on the floor for digs and smashed a few powerful fills through the defense to demoralize Pellston. Brege, the libero, patrolled the back line and Streich’s sets put the ball in the wheelhouse of the front row attackers.

Frehsman Taylor Fleming had 12 kills and Kayla Rabeau added seven kills and nine digs.

The Hurons advance to the state Class D quarterfinals in Manistique Tuesday.
