Posen, Onaway win; Rogers City loses in week three

Week three football roundup of Presque Isle County teams.

ONAWAY

The long bus drive to Stephenson High School took its toll on the Onaway football team before the Cards rallied for a 30-24 win.

The Cards got up early Saturday morning and traveled across the Upper Peninsula to the central time zone and were not ready to play. The defense played poorly, the offense had a few first downs and Stephenson enjoyed a 24-0 lead at the break. The Onaway players heard it from the coaches at halftime.

Jim Cleaver and company know the Cards could play better football, and they certainly did, turning the tables on the home squad and completely dominating the final 24 minutes.

It sets up a battle of two 2-1 squads when Cedarville visits Cardinal Stadium Friday night. The Trojans lost last week to Rapid River, 28-14.

ROGERS CITY

All coach Tim Nagy wanted his team to do after the 44-0 loss to the Alcona Tigers was forget about it.

“It’s done. We have a long season ahead, is what I told them. There is nothing you can do about it now. We just have to come back,” Nagy said. Rogers City (2-1) travels to Hillman (2-1) for a 7 p.m. game Friday.

Rogers City turned the ball over three times, twice on interceptions and once on a fumble. The coach said the team needs to cut down on penalties and mistakes.

The coach was pleased with how the team played hard until the end, pointing out junior receiver Alex Altman, who made a catch in traffic on the game’s last play. He took a hard hit, but held on to the football for a 14-yard gainer as time expired.

“We shot ourselves in the foot. I thought we came out pretty well. We were moving the ball but made mistake after mistake. That’s the worst game we played since I’ve been here. The effort was there, but we just can’t go on making mistakes,” Nagy said.

There will be no margin for error this week as the Hurons take on Hillman (2-1) a 35-20 winner over AuGres (0-3) last week. Hillman has made the Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs each year since 2006 and have a four-game winning streak over the Hurons. East Jordan (1-2) defeated Hillman in week two, 28-8 after Hillman won its opener 37-0 over Rudyard.

POSEN

The Viking football team remains undefeated in 2015 with another impressive win last Thursday over Ewen-Trout Creek, 64-14.

This year’s squad continues to put up eye-opening offensive numbers, especially on the ground. The Vikings rushed for 379 rushing yards and scored six touchdowns on the ground.

In scoring more than 60 points for the third straight week, they already have exceeded last year’s “points scored” total by 24, 186-160.

Posen takes its 3-0 record into its biggest test of the early season, a road game at Bellaire, a field the Vikes have never won on.

“Our kids really showed up to play football tonight and they took care of business,” said head coach Greg Pietsch. “I was real happy with the way we got off the bus. We played very intense, right from the first kickoff…it’s really starting to come together and we are really playing as a team.”

Pietsch expects a tough ballgame Friday. “It’s going to be a challenge,” said Pietsch.

Posen has not started the season 4-0 since 2003.
