Rogers City varsity head football coach Tim Nagy missed last Friday’s contest against Hillman due to illness, according to athletic director David O’Bryant.

According to O’Bryant, Nagy resigned due to personal reasons by submitting a letter of resignation Monday.  O’Bryant, shared the letter with interim superintendent Lee Sandy.

“Rogers City High School appreciates the commitment and time coach Nagy has put into the program and for pushing our staff and kids to be better. The football staff and the district as a whole look forward to the future of the football program and will push the kids to be the best they can be on and off the field,” said O’Bryant. “I would like to personally thank Mr. Nagy for his work in rebuilding the Rogers City football team into a contending team and wish him luck in any future endeavors.”

ASSISTANT COACH Cory Malocha will step up to be the varsity head coach for the immediate future. O’Bryant and Sandy will be working together to come up with a permanent solution for the remainder of the season and beyond once meetings with current coaching staff can be held.

O’Bryant addressed the team at practice Tuesday evening to let them know about Nagy’s resigation.

Nagy took over the program in 2012 from Joe Fairbanks and after

going 1-8 his first year improved the Hurons to 3-6 in 2013 and 5-4 last season.

“It was dropped on me really fast. I am ready for it. I want to do it. I love football. I live football. I learned a lot from coach Nagy. He was a great coach. The kids loved him. We all liked him and got along,” said coach Malocha who now takes the reigns.

“We are ready to grow now. We are ready to go against Central Lake. We are getting prepared for them. The kids are excited to play. We have to move on and keep going,” said coach Malocha.

Nagy was not available to comment as the Advance went to press.

CHEERLEADING COACH Jen Urban quit her coaching position last Friday prior to the Hillman game. Some of the members of the cheerleading squad drove to the game to cheer but O’Bryant did not allow them to cheer in uniform as they had no coach. According to O’Bryant, Joan Lehman will be taking over as the cheerleading coach for the remainder of the season to allow the athletes to continue to put their hard work over the summer on display.
