The Rogers City Hurons’ varsity football team snuck out a win at home Friday to open the season. The Hurons won 14-8 after overcoming 10 penalties costing them more than 150 total yards and used a goal-line stand with AuGres at the 2-yard line with 1:25 remaining in the game to seal the deal.

Seniors Casey Szatkowski and Alex Hincka along with junior Jacob Hein stuffed the AuGres running back at the 1-yard line to give the ball back to the Hurons.

“That was the ballgame. If you don’t play on that play you don’t belong out here. It was a great stand,” said coach Tim Nagy.

Senior quarterback Quintin Kelly t

hen snuck the ball up the middle twice to give the Hurons some breathing room so they could line up in victory formation and seal the opening-week victory.

“I thought we were going to roll these guys over. Give a lot of credit to them. They had 12 guys and they never gave up, they were a classy bunch,” said coach Nagy.

AuGres came out of the locker room and was aggressive as they had a successful onside kick to start the game.

Rogers City struck first on the scoreboard in the first quarter. The Hurons took over on downs at their own 45-yard line with 4:51 remaining in the opening quarter.
