Traynham, Nave wrestling at state finals

The quest for a state title began Thursday for Onaway wrestlers Joe Traynham and Zeke Nave at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The grand march featuring the top 16 wrestlers in 14 weight classes across four divisions was Thursday (after press time). Starting weight for the tournament will be 119 pounds. Wrestling will began at 2 p.m. yesterday.

Today (Friday) round two, the consolation first round for those losing in the opening round will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the championship quarterfinals for winners of opening round matches at 10:30 a.m.

The consolation second round will start at approximately 1:30 p.m. with the championship semifinals at 7 p.m. tonight.

TRAYNHAM, A senior, returns to the Palace after taking the state title a year ago. He enters the finals with a record of 13-3 and is ranked No. 3 at 112 pounds in Division 4 according to Michigan Grappler. He took on sophomore Trey Shafer of Reading (34-8) in t

he opening round yesterday.

Nave, a junior, returns to the Palace after a fifth-place finish a year ago. He enters with a record of 39-7 and is ranked No. 9 at 125 pounds in Division 4 according to Michigan Grappler. In his opening round match he took on No. 2 ranked Carson City Crystal senior Dallas O’Green (54-1).

Wrestling will begin on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the consolation third round followed by the consolation semifinals and consolation finals. The grand march for those who place in the top eight in their weight class will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with the finals scheduled for 4:45 p.m.
