Bowlers roll for more championships at state

Dominance continues for the Rogers City Huron bowling teams as both teams again won regional titles over the weekend to move on to the state finals.

For the girls’ team it is the eighth time they have won the regional title. Since bowling became a letter sport in Rogers City the girls’ team has qualified for the finals 10 of the 11 years and won a state title in 2010.

And they didn’t just win. They did it in convincing fashion, by 416 pins over the regional runner-up. The Lady Hurons rolled baker games of 139, 168, 157, 190, 198 and 161 for an average of 168.8 during the baker games. 

They didn’t stop there. They rolled regular games of 832, 846 and 792 and finished the day with 3,483 total pins. Maple City/Glen Lake was second with 3,067 total pins and St. Ignace finished third with 2,862 total pins. All three teams will now move on to the state finals in Lansing Friday.

The boys’ team also won the regional title, also its eighth title in 11 years. The Huron boys won the state title in 2012 and finished as the state runners-up in 2004 and 2010.

The boys also won in convincing fashion as they had 3,446 and second place Traverse City Christian had 3,403. Mason County Central was third with 3,311.

Rogers City had baker games of 173, 154, 172, 246, 139 and 172 for an average of 176. Regular-games scores were 778, 861 and 751 as they claimed the regional title.

SIX INDIVIDUALS also qualified for the individual tournament to be held Saturday. Sophomore Tracey Peters won the regional title with 1,046 total pins rolling scores of 183, 144, 201, 171, 168 and 179. Junior Alana Wirgau was third with 1,015 pins and scores of 157, 182, 149, 164, 189 and 174.

Junior Sarah Meredith was sixth with 965 as she had scores of 156, 178, 134, 165, 190 and 142. Senior Rebecca Bannasch was seventh at 962 and had scores of 127, 180, 168, 137, 181 and 169.

Junior Corey Grulke was second in the regional for boys with 1,143, just 12 pins behind the regional champion, as he rolled scores of 160, 198, 188, 170, 173 and 254. Junior Bailey Budnik was third at 1,129 and had scores of 190, 185, 197, 184, 154 and 219.

nior Amber Nowicki (114, 150, 136, 158, 169, 125) and her sister freshman Ashley Nowicki (122, 139, 152, 122, 165, 152) finished tied for 18th with 852. The 10th and final qualifier had 911 total pins.

Sophomore Josh Foster finished in 12th place with 1,020, the 10th and final qualifier had 1,023, just three pins away. Foster had scores of 194, 186, 170, 153, 146 and 171. Sophomore Jacob Hilla was 19th at 968 and had scores of 135, 156, 182, 161, 154 and 180. Junior Justin Robin was 41st at 852 with scores of 189, 126, 138, 136, 121 and 142.

THE STATE finals begin Friday with the team qualifying event at 8:25 a.m.
