Commission makes board appointments

Monday evening the Onaway City Commission met with a very light agenda. The first order of business on the agenda was the appointment of commissioners to serve on various committees/boards.

The appointments remained the same as in years past with mayor Gary Wregglesworth and Chuck Abshagen serving on the fire board and Bernie Schmeltzer on the ambulance board with commissioner Ron Horrocks as the alternate. Schmeltzer will also serve as deputy mayor.

Commissioner Jessie Horrocks and Wregglesworth will be the negotiating committee and Schmeltzer and Abshagen will serve on the Department of Public Works committee.

THE COMMISSION also approved the reappointment of Theresa Splan and Laura Shack to the downtown development authority as both were willing to serve another term.

Appointments to the planning commission were tabled until the next meeting as city manager Joe Hefele had not checked with those having an expiring term to see if they wanted to continue serving. Those appointments do not expire until Jan. 30.

An invoice for work at the wastewater treatment plant that had come in Monday afternoon was approved and will be submitted to the United States Department of Agriculture – Rural Development for reimbursement.

HEFELE ALSO updated the commission on a few ongoing items he has been working on. A street plan, done with the assistance of Toby Kuznicki, assistant engineer for Rogers City, has been completed. The plan is to do $50,000-$60,000 worth of street work each year for the next 19 years.

Hefele has submitted all the information needed for the new city website to the webmaster and is hopeful the new site will be up and running by the end of the month.
