Cards travel north to quarterfinals

It is on to the Class D quarterfinals for the Onaway Cardinals (34-16-5). Coach Steve Watson’s volleyball team. The Cards take on Stephenson, which comes into the match with a 30-4-4 record. Like Onaway, Stephenson has not lost a set in the tournament.

They defeated Powers North Central, Felch North Dickenson and Bark River Harris in the districts. Then in the regional round they dispatched of Munising and Crystal Falls Forest Park.

Stephenson was ranked number eight in the final coach’s poll while Onaway came in at number nine.

The winner of Tuesday’s quarterfinal plays the winner of the Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart, an honorable mention in the poll vs. top-ranked Leland quarterfinal in Friday’s Class D state semifinals at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. That match begins at 3:45 p.m.

Other teams left in the tournament are Mendon (2) vs. Battle Creek St. Phillip (3) and Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes (5) vs. Marine City Cardinal Mooney (7).

Onaway’s match is the second of the night at Manistique High School. It follows the Roscommon vs. Calumet Class C quarterfinal which begins at 6 p.m. Manistique  athletic director Rob Ryan estimated the Onaway vs. Stephenson match should begin around 7:30 p.m., or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the Roscommon vs. Calumet match.
