Hurons get 54-0 win over Hale

Three offensive plays. Three touchdowns. That is how a 54-0 Huron win over the Hale Eagles began last Friday in Hale.

A fired up Huron squad showed no mercy over winless Hale in scoring an incredible 40 first-quarter points.

“Its hard to play these kinds of games. It is nice to get your stats and your points, but what we really wanted to do is not to make any mistakes. We did make some. We worked on focus this week and I am not happy about it. In these kind of games it is kind of hard to stay focused,” said Huron coach Tim Nagy.

Cameron Urban started it with a 47-yard run up the middle on the first offensive play of the game. Casey Szatkowski booted the extra point.

Jacob Malocha recovered a fumble at the Huron 47 and on the first play of the next drive, darted 53 yards for a touchdown. Szatkowski’s kick made it 14-0 with 9:58 left in the first quarter.

The undermanned Hale Eagles went three-and-out on their next possession. Malocha had a 37-yard punt return to set up the next score. Urban went 21 yards around left end on first down to make it 20-0. The Hurons ran three plays and scored three touchdowns in just over the first four minutes of play.

Hale, who suited up only 12 players, had trouble handling snaps and picking up blitzing Huron linebackers. A poor punt gave the Hurons great field position, setting up the next score. Austin Bober went 5 yards around left end to make it 26-0 with 4:46 left in the first quarter.

Quintin Kelly intercepted a pass near midfield and returned it to the Hale 26 to set up the next first-quarter score. Runs of 10 and 15 yards by Josh Belusar came before a 1-yard sneak by Kelly. Belusar caught a two-point pass from Kelly to make the score 34-0 with 3:58 left in the first quarter.

But that would not end the scoring in the first quarter for the Hurons.

A potential punt return for a touchdown by Malocha came back after a penalty, but two plays later the Hurons scored again anyway. Kelly hit Justin Saile for a 10-yard touchdown pass.

Hale scored a moral victory by holding the Hurons scoreless in the second quarter.

The scoring resumed in the third quarter as Malocha scored on a 59-yard run on the Hurons’ first possession of the second half. Szatkowski’s PAT kick made it 47-0 with 6:34 left in the third quarter.

Belusar’s 19-yard run with10:27 left in the game gave the Hurons their final score.

A running clock in the second half sped the game along. The Hurons rushed for 407 yards on 30 carries

“Our guys kept hitting. I told them just keep hitting so you don’t get hurt and they di

d. I am proud of them. They deserve one of these every once in a while,” Nagy said.

The Hurons play at Mio (2-3) Friday and host undefeated Whittemore-Prescott Oct. 10. Mio lost to Whittemore-Prescott, and to Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard (4-1) before consecutive wins over Atlanta (1-4) and Oscoda (2-3). Hillman (5-0) defeated Mio 39-32 last week.
