The Onaway Cardinals varsity volleyball team defeated Forest Area Tuesday in the team’s home opener.

Senior Lexi Szymoniak wasn't going to let this ball drop on the Onaway side of the net without trying for it.

Onaway took game one 25-5 and game two 25-11 before taking the final game of the set 25-18 to complete the sweep and improve to 3-0 in Ski Valley Conference play. The Cardinals and the Pellston Hornets are undefeated in conference play.

Senior Morganne Badgero had eight kills, four aces and seven digs. Alison LaFave added nine dig

s and two kills while Elise Arkwood added two kills, four aces and two digs.

Jade Galer had eight digs. Elisha Ionetz and Roxanne Kortman each had four digs and Eleana Domke added two kills in a match where many Cardinals got the opportunity to contribute. As a team the Cardinals had 34 kills in the match.

“Historically Forest Area is strong, they are just down right now. They have a Hall of Fame coach. We are more experienced than they are this year and it showed tonight. We came out strong in the first set. It was good to get another conference win in our home opener,” said coach Steve Watson.

Gaylord St. Mary came to town Thursday (after press time) and the Cardinals will travel to the St. Ignace Invitational Saturday.
