New garbage collection company approved

After spending the last few months attempting to work with trash hauler Triple D Disposal the City of Onaway terminated its relationship with the company last Thursday at the end of the business day.

Triple D Disposal failed to return a signed contract and proof of insurance to the city.

With that information known, Republic Waste Services and PAC Sanitation both submitted voluntary bids to the city as they were willing to step in and take over the trash collection.

Republic submitted a bid to charge $10.25 per customer per month with each resident receiving a rolling cart to place garbage in. PAC Sanitation’s bid was $9.25 per month, no cart.

The commissioners thanked both companies for being willing to step in and help them out but in light of the economy had to go with the low bid. They approved the proposal from PAC Sanitation. The contract will run through March 2016, ending at the time the contract with Triple D Disposal would have ended.

IN OTHER CITY COMMISSION NEWS:

<p>• The commission will hold a public hearing in consideration of the vacation of an alley at its Aug. 18 meeting. Robert McCue requested that the city vacate an undeveloped alley in Young’s Addition, block 10. The alley extends from north Second to north Third.

• With the department of public works nearly out of gravel the commission approved the purchase of 1,000 yards of gravel from the Northcott pit on M-211. The gravel is $7 per yard for a total of $7,000. The owner of the pit will bill the purchase over two different budget years. The city will be responsible for loading and hauling the gravel.

• The commission approved paying election chairpersons $12 per hour and inspectors $10 per hour for working during elections.
