Streich, Selke named athletes of the year at RCHS

Piles of awards were handed out to worthy Rogers City High School student athletes at last week’s athletic awards night. The Huron Athletic Boosters sponsor the annual event that recognizes the most valuable and most improved in all sports.

A host of special awards, including the athletes of the year, highlighted the evening. Female athlete of the year, the Dan Rose Award, went to Courtney Streich. She earned most valuable for the girls’ basketball team and was a major contributor for the volleyball and softball teams.

Andrew Selke, who recovered from a major knee injury to have an outstanding senior wrestling season highlighted by his third-place finish at the state finals, was the winner of the Joseph A. Valentin Award as the male athlete of the year. He also competed in cross country for the Hurons.

Other major award winners were Cynthia Kerr and Noah Lafferty winners of the James Quinn Award as the top senior scholar athletes. Megan Quaine and Cassie Brege shared the Judy Paradise Award for the senior female athlete who displays outstanding sportsmanship and athletic ability.

Jack Ryan won the Mark Smolinski Award given to the varsity football player with the most dedication and devotion on and off the field.

The John Florip Award, given to the outstanding freshman wrestler, went to Tristan Baller and the Chuck Altman Award, awarded to the outstanding freshman track athlete, went to Emily Malocha.

Steve Calabrese earned the John Geyer Award, given to a community member who volunteers their time and energy to help Rogers City High School athletes and the athletic program. He earned the honor for his outstanding work with the boosters in organizing a series of fundraising events. The boosters club, made up of community members and parents of athletes, is responsible for pumping thousands of dollars into the sports program over the years used for sports equipment and a regular supply of new uniforms. Calabrese’s efforts helped make that possible.

Winning most valuable for their sports were: Jenna Tulgetske (volleyball); Clay Nadolsky (football); Alex Hincka and Chris Lopez and Courtney Streich (basketball); Emily Malocha and Lopez (track and field); Nic

ole Bannasch, Rebecca Bannasch, Alana Wirgau and Alex Darga (bowling); Jacob Sobeck and Malocha (cross country); Bailey Budnik (golf) and Sobeck (wrestling).

Most improved for their sports were awarded to Corey Grulke and Ericka Pauly (bowling); Tristan Baller (wrestling); Rebecca Myers and Chris Tulgestka (cross country) Chrystopher Hogg and Myers (track and field); Cassidy Purgiel and Caleb Karsten (basketball); Cole Henry (football); and Purgiel (volleyball) and Sara Quaine (golf).

The JoLen Flewelling Award along with other baseball and softball awards will be awarded after the season concludes.
