Posen High School was awarded a bronze medal as part of U.S. News and World Report’s “2014 Best high Schools” rankings, the schools second bronze award in four years.

The magazine annually ranks high schools based on state testing performance, student-teacher ratio, academic achievement by minority students and performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate classes.

“It is pretty tough to be recognized,” said superintendent John Palmer. “It does not happen without dedication and willingness on the teachers’ part. That’s what is happening here. We have a bunch of staff members that are really pulling together and getting the job done.”

The math proficiency score was 2.0, while reading was at 2.6. The student teacher ratio is 18:1.

“We are very proud to have received this award,” said board of education president Ken Wozniak. “This indicates that even though we are a small school, we are very determined and dedicated to give our students a quality education. Our staff is making a great eff

ort to have

our students prepared. The timing of this award is appropriate as this is teacher appreciation week.”

There were 131 bronze award winners in Michigan. Ten high schools in Michigan received gold medals, while 50 were honored with silver medals

On behalf of the staff at Posen Consolidated Schools:  “It is the second time in four years that our school has been recognized and I feel it shows the dedication that our small staff has to the education of the students at Posen Consolidated Schools and the students commitment to their academics,” said secondary teacher Glenn Budnick.

Six northern Michigan schools received bronze awards, including Alcona, Atlanta, Fairview, Hillman, Johannesburg-Lewiston and Oscoda.
