It was a great day to be a fan of Huron athletics.

The baseball and softball district tournaments were played at Johannesburg-Lewiston High School and the Hurons made an impact on the state tournament on both fields.

The highly ranked softball team played well in all aspects of the game and captured a district championship with solid victories over Posen and Hillman, while the up-and-coming baseball team played spoiler by eliminating county rival Onaway in a district semifinal contest.

The Joburg baseball field was the site of two major upsets this week as the host school up ended top ranked Hillman on Tuesday. Rogers City made some serious noise themselves Saturday by knocking out an Onaway club with a long tournament run on their minds. The score was 6-5. Justin Saile picked up the win. The Hurons lost in the district title game to Joburg, 18-3, as the pitching depth was lacking, but the program seems to be poised for good things in the immediate future.

For the softball squad, the future is here and now and the next step will be the regional tournament next

Saturday in Rogers City. The Hurons made it to a state semifinal game before losing to Kalamazoo Christian in 2013.

Nikki Radke was the winning pitcher in a 9-2 win over Posen. Alexa Quaine and Sarah Meredith homered and the defense played well in avenging two earlier North Star League games.

Quaine got the win in a mercy-shortened 10-0 contest. Cassie Brege had a two-RBI double in the fourth to make it 5-0 and knocked in two more in the bottom of the fifth to put Hillman away.
