Onaway advances, two county teams eliminated

Two Presque Isle County teams were eliminated from the state tournament Wednesday at the Class D district tournament being played at Hillman. A pair of semifinals games decided who would play in the district championship game Friday at 6 p.m. It will be Onaway trying to deny Hillman a return trip to the regional tournament.

Onaway's Carlos Bautista and Posen's Nick Hincka battled for position in Wednesday night's district game.

Onaway defeated Posen 59-49 in the early contest Wednesday night. The Cardinals used a 12-3 run in the second quarter to pull away from a Vikings squad that upset them in the playoffs a year ago. Senior Joe O’Bradovich scored 12 of his game-high 23 points in the quarter. Nick Hincka had 18 in his final high school contest for Posen. Onaway is looking for its first title since 1989. The Vikings finished 10-9.

Rogers City got 17 from senior Chris Lopez in a 79-52 loss to Hillman. The Hurons showed vast improvement compared to an earlier loss to the Tigers. “A team like this, we had to be perfect,” said Huron coach Jesse Streich. “I am proud of the kids, they fought hard.” Rogers City finished with a 2-19 record.

More details, photos and quotes from the coaches will appear in the next edition of the Advance.
