Hurons win playoff opener, tougher task ahead

The Huron boys’ basketball team won its district tournament opener with three players scoring in double figures. They knocked off winless Vanderbilt, 69-26. It was not only the second win in two years (both coming this season), but it was the most points scored by the offense in two years.

Going in, the Yellow Jackets were probably the weakest team in the tournament being played at Hillman. Now, the Hurons get the favored team, which is the host school.

Rogers City had the upper hand with a 20-4 first quarter, even though the intensity may have been lacking early. “I did not like the intensity in the first half,” said coach Jesse Streich. “I don’t think they came out with enough, honestly. Wednesday we have Hillman, so we know we have to come out 100 times better to have a chance.”

When asked what it would take to pull off the upset, “we are going to have to play hard and not turn the ball over.”

Chris Lopez had a game-high 24, while Alex Hincka put in 15. Quintin Kelly stepped up with 14.

The Hurons play in the second contest of Wednesday’s doubleheader. Onaway and Posen are scheduled for a rematch on the other side of the bracket vying for a slot in the title game.
