Conference title goes to Huron wrestlers

The Rogers City Hurons’ varsity wrestling team won the North Star League/Straits Area Conference meet Saturday in St. Ignace. The Hurons built a big lead early in the day to take the title over conference foe Whittemore Prescott.

Rogers City had three champions on the day as Justin Saile (125), Cameron Urban (130) and Jacob Sobeck (145) were each undefeated.

Saile pinned Rudyard’s Justin Postma in 49 seconds and Sault Ste. Marie’s Tyler Schumann in 3:40 to take the title. Saile is now 37-7 on the season.

Urban started the day with a pin of Rudyard’s Zach Carter-Powell in 3:13 and pinned Sault Ste. Marie’s Charlie Dunton in 3:08 to finish first. Urban is now 42-5 on the season.

Jacob Sobeck pinned his teammate Zach Myers in 1:40 to start the day. He then pinned Oscoda’s Josh Ward in 37 seconds to make the finals. In the finals he defeated Whittemore Prescott’s Dakota Findlay 3-0. He is now 44-1 on the season.

Andrew Selke (215), Austin Bober (160) and Noah Sobeck (135) each finished second on the day. Selke pinned Oscoda’s Jay Febish in 44 seconds and Colten McGregor of Mio in 3:59 before falling to Nathan LaJoie of Sault Ste. Marie by pin in the finals. Selke is now 40-5 on the season.

Bober pinned Oscoda’s Alec Poland in 1:40, Newberry’s Krista Raymond in 1:31 and Reilly McMaster of Mio in 2:53 to make the finals. In the finals he fell to Sault Ste. Marie’s Michael James 11-4 to place second. Bober is now 28-13 on the season.

Noah Sobeck pinned Mio’s Skyler Stroch in 1:18 and Whittemore Prescott’s Corey Maynard in 1:36 en route to the finals. In the finals he fell to Oscoda’s Ben Rayes by pin in 2:40. He is now 31-13 on the season.

Tommy Vogelheim (103), Jack Ryan (152) and Jared LaFleche (171) each finished fourth on the day. Vogelheim pinned Rudyard’s Haley Wilkins in 57 seconds and defeated Sault Ste. Marie’s Tristen Hurley 18-3 before falling to Mio’s Patrick Stephens by pin in 51 seconds.

Vogelheim then battled back pinning Munising’s Zach McGown in 2:09 before losing to Whittemore Prescott’s Billy Huff 8-7 to place fourth. Vogelheim is now 28-15 on the season.

Ryan lost to Whittemore Prescott’s Mikey Arndt 3-1 before pinning St. Ignace’s Robin Chargo in 1:12 and Bobby Miles of Munising to make the consolation finals. Ryan again faced Arndt and fell 2-0 to finish fourth. Ryan is now 30-14 on the season.

LaFleche defeated Marek Salhauer of Newbery before falling to Henry Cobb of Munising in 4:41. He then pinned Sault Ste. Marie’s Patrick Rambo in 2:05 before falling to Onaway’s Matt Tollini 7-2 to finish fourth. LaFleche is now 33-13 on the season.

Tristan Baller went 1-2 at 112 pounds narrowly missing a chance to wrestle for third with a 11-10 loss to Tom Merchberger of Sault Ste. Marie. Baller is now 20-20 on the season.

enry (140) also went 1-2 on the day and Jon Molzan (189) was 0-2 on the day.

THE HURONS finished the regular season last Wednesday in Mio where they defeated Oscoda 55-24 and Whittemore Prescott 45-31. Going 2-0 on the day were Saile, Noah Sobeck, Urban, Jacob Sobeck, Ryan, Bober, LaFleche and Selke. Baller, Vogelheim and Henry were each 1-1 on the day.

The Hurons finished the regular season with a 26-4 record. They competed at the team district tournament today (Thursday) after press time in Charlevoix. The Hurons will be at Newberry Saturday for the individual district tournament.

Team regionals are scheduled for Feb. 12 in Manistique. Individual regionals will be held in Rogers City Feb. 15 with the top four finishers in each weight class moving on to the state tournament.
