Wrestlers claim district title

The Rogers City Hurons varsity wrestling team captured the program’s 31st district title last week in Charlevoix. Wednesday they traveled to Manistique (after press time) in search of a regional title.

Saturday the team was in Newberry for the individual district tournament and nine Hurons placed in the top four in their weight classes to move on to the regional tournament Saturday in Rogers City.

Jacob Sobeck (140) and Andrew Selke (215) were district champions. Jacob Sobeck pinned Charlevoix’s Stormi McDonald in 19 seconds and Carter Wilmot of Boyne City in 3:15 to move on the semifinals. In the semifinals he defeated Tanner Gonzales of Norway 11-2. In the finals he faced Cole Gonzales of Norway and won by pin in 4:52.

Selke pinned his way through the tournament. He pinned Devin Largent of Charlevoix in 55 seconds, Steven Livermore of Newberry in 5:08 and Curtis LaBadie of Bark River Harris in 2:39.

Tommy Vogelheim (103), Cameron Urban (130) and Austin Bober (152) were second on the day. Vogelheim’s first match didn’t come until the semifinals when he pinned St. Ignace’s Austin Marshall in 1:49. In the finals Vogelheim fell to Norway’s Zac Decremer by pin in 1:23.

Urban pinned Lucas VonLau of Charlevoix in 51 seconds and Vicente Carlson of Ishpeming Westwood in 2:20 to make it to the finals where he fell to Iron Mountain’s Chuck Edwards 10-5.

Bober pinned Onaway’s Juan Janeczak in 1:10 and Bobby Miles of Munising in 3:30 to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals he defeated Norway’s Zavier Gonzales 6-0 before falling to Boyne City’s Connor Mills 11-2 in the finals.

Jared LaFleche (171) and Noah Sobeck (135) each finished third on the day. LaFleche pinned Manistique’s Gabe Karr in 3:48 before falling to Onaway’s Matt Tollini 1-0. He then battled back with pins over Austin DeBacker of Gwinn in 4:38 and Travis Moon of Norway in 3:26 to reach the consolation finals. In the match for third place he pinned Cooper Guidebeck of Ishpeming Westwood in 4:07.

Noah Sobeck pinned Munising’s Geoff Reffruschinni in 3:38 before falling to Iron Mountain’s Corbin Henkel by pin in 5:49. He then pinned Shawn McIntyre of Ishpeming Westwood in 4:59 to reach the consolation finals where he pinned Brett Rautio of Ishpeming Westwood in 1:49.

Jack Ryan (145) and Justin Saile (125) were both fourth on the day. Saile pinned Norway’s Michael Tomczak in 1:59 before losing to Norway’s Donny Houle by pin in 2:10. Saile then pinned Justin Postma of Rudyard in 59 seconds before losing to Austin Miller of Manistique 4-6.

Ryan pinned Boyne City’s Jordan Wilmot in 3:18 before falling by pin to Joran Tousingnant of Ishpemin

g in 3:51. He then defeated Chandler Roberts of Boyne City 21-7 before losing to Cody Spade of Norway 9-6.

All nine will compete at individual regionals Saturday in Rogers City beginning at 9 a.m. The regional finals should take place around 3 p.m. Saturday.

LAST THURSDAY the Hurons defeated Onaway 60-24 in the district semifinals and then dominated Charlevoix in the district final winning 49-28. Wednesday they took on Norway, the team that defeated the Hurons in regionals a year ago in the regional semifinals with the winner facing the winner between Ishpeming Westwood and Rudyard.

Double winners for the Hurons last Thursday were Vogelheim (103), Saile (125), Noah Sobeck (130), Urban (135), Cole Henry (140), Ryan (145/152), Jake Sobeck (145/152), Bober (160/171) and Selke (215). LaFleche (171) was 1-1 on the day.
