Reward offered in elk shooting

A $2,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the subject(s) involved in the November shooting of a bulk elk in Bismarck Township.

The Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the incident and continues to seek additional information.

The elk was shot in the throat while inside a fenced area owned by Norm Arlt.

Sheriff’s office authorities believe it was done intentionally using a small caliber firearm. They also surmise   that the animal suffered for several days following the shooting. The incident was called in Nov. 18, 2013 but Arlt said the elk had been dead for a week-and-a-half. He placed the value of the animal at $10,000.

Elk and deer move together in a fenced area covering a half-a-square mile area. Three-quarters of the property are heavily wooded. There are swamps, the hardwoods, fields and ponds.

“Sometimes you don’t see them (animals) for months,”said Arlt, interviewed last year. He has been raising deer and elk since 1998 and has never had anything like this happen before.

Arlt is the former owner of the Water’s Edge Restaurant and had elk on display behind the business.

Anyone with information is urged to call the sheriff’s office at 989-734-2156.
