Onaway girls restore winning mark with defeat of Wolverine

The Onaway High School varsity girls’ basketball team moved back over the .500 mark Monday when it defeated host Wolverine, 53-17. The win improved the Cardinals’ record to 6-5.

The Cards jumped on top early and led 11-2 after the first period. The Wldcats cut the gap to 17-9 by the half, but OHS outscored Wolverine 17-4 in the third period and 19-4 in the fourth to win going away.

Lexi Szymoniak scored 20 points to lead the way for the visiting squad. Erika Price added 15 points and Jade Galer chipped in with six. Courtney Whitaker scored seven points to pace the home team.

Earlier in the evening, the Cardinal JV defeated the Wildcats, 39-25. Onaway led 9-4 after one period, 21-12 at the half, and 32-20 through three quarters. Taylor Ehrke had 17 points and Vydalia Letts had 12.

Last Friday, the OHS varsity fell to 4-4 in the Ski Valley Conference with a 46-31 loss at Bellaire. The game was tied at eight after one quarter, but the Eagles led 18-13 at the half and 37-23 through three frames.

Szymoniak scored 11 points, Price scored eight, and Galer scored six. The Eagles featured a balanced attack that saw six players score between six and nine points.

Earlier in the evening, the Red Bird JV fell to Bellaire, 42-27. Onaway trailed 11-8 after one, 21-13 at the half, and 34-20 through three. Ehrke scored eight points and Allison LaFave had five.

The girls’ basketball teams, which hosted Joburg on Wednesday, will host Central Lake on Tuesday and host Gaylord St. Mary on Thursday.
