Korynn becomes first NSL female to score 2,000 points

A great scoring milestone was reached Friday when Posen center Korynn Hincka scored the 2,000th point of her career to become the first female player in North Star League history to reach the mark.
It came in a competitive league encounter against Au Gres, who provided another mid-January test for the undefeated Vikings. The Wolverines brought in sophomore center Cassidy Boensch, who is a couple of inches taller than Posen’s star center. The scoring did not come easy for either side.
However, points 2,000 and 2,001 were by far the easiest of the night.
It was a play early in the second quarter and the Wolverine defense lost track of the two-time all-stater, who camped under the basket as the play went into the left corner.
The defense converged on ball handler Jenna Hincka, who saw her cousin wide-open under the basket and fired the pass over. Boensch scrambled over and tried to get a hand out, but it was far too late. Korynn made history.
Posen head coach Karl Momrik called timeout to acknowledge the moment with 5:30 on the clock and Korynn walked over to the bench to receive hugs from her teammates and got a kiss on the side of the head from her dad, assistant coach Eric Hincka. Play resumed and the Lady Vikings took off.
The score was 10-10 at the end of one, but the teams traded baskets for a 12-all score. Korynn scored the next eight points, including the milestone maker, to give the Vikings a 20-12 lead. Jenna’s long two with four seconds left in the half made it 22-12. Posen stayed in control the rest of the way and went on to win its 55th straight conference game by a score of 41-26.
“It’s a big deal, and I just want to thank my coaches, teammates and God for giving me this opportunity,” said Korynn, who finished with 24. She did not know that was the play that put her over the top. ‘I do remember I got the ball from my cousin Jenna.” She almost scored the record maker on a half court shot that rimmed out at the end of the first.
Boensch finished with only nine. The sophomore, who appeared to have played every minute, was worn down by Posen’s swarming defense and was dragging by game’s end. She is transferring to Bay City John Glenn, so it was her last appearance in Posen.
“Once again, a great defensive effort for us,” said Momrik. “We played two very good teams from the south. We allowed only 28 in one, and 26 in the other.” Posen defeated Arenac Eastern, Jan. 14. “Overall, we are very, very happy.”

“For her to be the first to reach 2,000, and for her to be from Posen, what a thrill,” said Momrik. “All the girls that have played with Korynn through the years, need to have a part of this total, too. It does not come with just one person, it comes with teamwork.”
Ashley Meyers had nine points for the Vikes.
The junior varsity has been playing outstanding of late and came away with a lopsided win over Au Gres, 53-17. Jolene Reese had almost as many points as the Wolverines at 16. Lauren Romel put in 12 and Elizabeth Kowalski had 11. Brianna Kuffel added eight.
The girls are at Oscoda on Monday.
