Ion blows through the north

A walker didn't have to worry about traffic on West Huron Avenue Monday morning.

Winter storm Ion hit northern Michigan hard late Sunday and Monday, causing schools to be closed and making driving hazardous. The National Weather Service estimated wind chill at -20 to -30 degrees Fahrenheit Monday morning around 10 a.m. as conditions continued to deteriorate.

Not too many vehicles could be seen on Third Street Monday morning as extreme cold temperatures and snow caused schools to be closed. The winter of 2013-14 has been one to remember so far in Presque Isle County.

The added snow made for snow removal problems, as plows fought the blowing winds and poor visibility while clearing a path for motorists.

Temperatures were expected to moderate later in the week, but residents were urged to take measures to keep warm as the storm roared through.
