The Rogers City Hurons varsity boys’ basketball team is showing signs of improvement with the start of 2014. The New Year began for the team with a win over Inland Lakes.

Monday the team traveled to Whittemore-Prescott where they were unable to overcome a slow start to the game and a slow start to the second half falling 67-46.

The Hurons fell behind 6-17 at the end of the first quarter. They matched the Cardinals in the second quarter as each team scored 18 points but Rogers City trailed 24-35 at the break.

Rogers City was outscored 5-15 in the third quarter and again matched the Cardinals in the final frame with each team netting 17 as they fell 67-46.

“We made mental mistakes. We obviously weren’t prepared for the game and that is my fault,” said coach Jesse Streich.

Sophomore Alex Hincka, who was in foul trouble in the second half, led the scoring attack with 17 points. He also added 15 rebounds.

Senior Chris Lopez scored 12 points, had 11 rebounds and seven steals. Freshman Andrew Radke and sophomore Quintin Kelly each had four points. Senior Brandon Darling had three points while junior Alex Darga, junior Adam Belusar and sophomore Casey Szatkowski each added two on a night when eight of the nine Hurons scored.

“We are showing signs of improvement. We are scoring points. We just have to get better. Our youth shows at times, we are a young team,” said coach Streich.

LAST THURSDAY the Hurons hosted the Alcona Tigers and fell 65-51. The score was tied at 14 at the end of the first quarter after Rogers City was trailing 6-0 with 4:41 left in the opening quarter. Alcona led 32-23 at the half.

At the end of the third quarter Alcona expanded their lead to

18 as they led 48-30. Hincka led the team with 19 points while Lopez added 18. Kelly had six, Darling had five and Darga added three.

THE JUNIOR varsity went 1-1 on the week. They fell Monday 59-53. Brendon Koss led the team with 14 points while Chris Tulgestka and Josh Belusar each had 10 points.
