Onaway Big Buck Pole offers great prizes for hunters

by Angie Asam-Staff Writer

Today is opening day of the firearm deer season. In northern Michigan it is regarded as a holiday for most, a day hunters look forward to as much as they do any other traditional holiday.

The Onaway Big Buck Pole will be located at Parrott’s Outpost and is being run by them and Ryan Howell of Tom’s Family Market but is made possible by a variety of sponsors.

“It’s being put together by the community. Anyone who donated to the event is a sponsor this year and we have some great prizes this year,” said Howell.

Although there is no registration fee for the buck pole, people must be registered in order to be eligible to win a prize. Also, you must be present to redeem your prize. The intent is not to have someone bring in a deer and leave, they want people to stick around and be there to accept their prize.

The buck pole will be open from noon until 7:30 p.m. today. The biggest buck by points and spread chooses the first prize. All deer must be at the buck pole and registered before 7:30 to be eligible for a prize.

There will be a $50 gift card for Parrott’s Outpost for the ol

dest hunter that brings a buck to the pole. The biggest deer for someone under age 16 will receive a $25 gift card to Parrott’s Outpost. The largest deer brought in by a female hunter will receive a $25 gift card to Manzana’s Restaurant and the youngest hunter that registers a buck will win a large pizza from the 211 Bar and Grill.

Prizes in the men’s category are a 308 Mossberg rifle with a scope, a full shoulder mount, $200 in cash, a Muzzle Break gift card to Red Oak Gunsmithing, some Bushnell range finders, a handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) and a $60 gift card to Dan’s Meat Processing.

Sponsors for the event include all those mentioned above as well as Citizens National Bank, Chaskey Septic Service, Steven’s Taxidermy, Pepsi, Northcott Excavating, Presque Isle Electric and Gas Co-op, Pest Control by Browning, Chagnon Funeral Home, Brewbakers Housing, Standard Plumbing and Heating, Awakon Federal Credit Union, Nu Way Stoves and Onaway Custom Embroidery. Refreshments will be available at the buck pole area and all are encouraged to participate and attend this community event.
