Traynham wins Ski Valley confernce, McLean earns honors

For the second time in school history, Onaway High School has a Ski Valley Conference cross country champion. Junior Joe Traynham finished the Ski Valley season in first place, becoming only the second Cardinal to do so after Lain Veihl earned the honor in 2008.

Morgan McLean will earn honorable mention all-conference honors as he finished 11th in the conference meet held Wednesday at Central Lake. The boys’ team finished the race in second place, just one point out of first place.

Noah Bacon finished 16th, Isaac Nave was 17th and Joe O’Bradovich was 19th to round out scoring for the Cardinals. Other finishers were Preston Badgero (21st), Seth Satchwell (25th) and Cameron Horn (28th).

g>THE GIRLS’ team finished fifth overall and were led by Clair Bastian in 16th place. Hannah Materna was 19th, Signe Magnussen was 21st, Kate Olmsted was 29th and Elise Arkwood was 30th to round out scoring for the Cardinals.

Other finishers were Tiffany Traynham (47th), Ericka Price (50th) and Maddy Watts (53rd).

“I was very pleased with the athletes and their performances. They ran terrific on a very challenging course. We are excited to gear up and get ready for regionals,” said coach Marty Mix.

The cross country season is almost over as the teams will be at regionals in Central Lake in just two weeks, Oct. 25. With a shot at competing at the state finals in Brooklyn the next weekend, the Cardinal runners will look to peak at the right time and use experience running the course to their advantage.
