Activities and festivals fill busy 4th

With Independence Day just around the corner, there are plenty of family-friendly events scheduled in the area to help celebrate the Fourth of July.

Onaway will be hosting its “Greatest Fourth in the North” celebration with many events. A Texas Hold’em tournament will be held at St. Paul Hall in Onaway today (Wednesday).

Thursday is a day packed with events in Onaway beginning with crafters at the courthouse square from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. A kiddie parade will be held at 11 a.m. and the Methodist Church is hosting a pie and ice cream social also at 11 a.m.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post 5857 will host a barbecue chicken dinner beginning at 11 a.m. From 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. there will be a giant salad bar at St. Paul Hall.

The grand parade is scheduled for noon, featuring the newest creation by Tom Moran, owner and founder of Moran Iron Works. The Onaway High School alumni tent will be buzzing with activity following the parade as well. The local firemen will also hold a water blast event following the parade.

Kiddie games, chuck-a-duck and more with food and beverages available will begin at 3 p.m. at Chandler Park. Foot races will be held on Maxon Field following the fireman’s water blast as well.

At dusk on July Fourth fireworks will be launched from Horrock’s Field on M-211 and can be seen from anywhere in the Onaway area.

The craft show on the courthouse lawn will continue on Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.. A teen dance will be held at Maxon field from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. Friday evening and the Onaway Antique Tractor Club will host a show with pulls at 7 p.m. at their grounds on M-211. The tractor show continues on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Saturday evening a live band, “Road Kill Jack” will perform at the Millersburg Train Depot at 7 p.m. An adult tent dance will be held on Maxon Field Saturday from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. with the band “Remedee.” Stoney Creek Bar and Grill will also host a live band, “Killing Time” on Saturday night.

Sunday is the Onaway VFW breakfast from 7 a.m. until noon and the tractor show continues at 9 a.m. with the pulls at noon.

PRESQUE ISLE Township is also hosting events on Saturday, July 6, with fun events at the park at the New Presque Isle Lighthouse. A parade will be held at 10:30 a.m. to kick off the day with a picnic to follow until 2 p.m

.

The fireworks committee will host bingo for all ages at 2 p.m. at the fog horn pavilion with children’s games, prizes and fun. Fireworks will be held at dusk at the harbor as well.

IN ROGERS City, the chamber of commerce and local businesses are sponsoring a Family Fun Day event this Saturday at Lakeside Park.

The fun begins at noon with bounce house amusements for the kids as well as a sawdust pile, games and face painting. Children’s events wrap up at 4 p.m.

A free concert featuring T.J. Thomas Kentucky Band will begin at 7 p.m. at the Lakeside Park band shell.

Fireworks will cap off the days events at dusk. All are invited and encouraged to come out and join in the fun as all events are free of charge.
