SVSU names Kimball outstanding student

Hailey Kimball graduated as the valedictorian of the Onaway High School class of 2009 and recently graduated from Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.

SVSU recently named Kimball an outstanding student from the College of Arts and Behavioral Sciences for 2012-13. “These students exemplify the very best in SVSU graduates. They have taken advantage of the opportunities here at SVSU, worked creatively and diligently, and won the respect and genuine affection of our university community. They represent the next generation of leaders and it has been our privilege to be part of their preparation for the contributions we are certain they will make to all our futures,” stated the press release.

Each of the outstanding students an their families were treated to a special ceremony prior to commencement exercises on May 11 at SVSU.

“Ms. Kimball is an excellent student and scholar. She has excelled in the department in all areas. Ms. Kimball has distinguished herself at the National Moot Court competition, Model United Nations and as president of the College Democrats. Ms. Kimball has been accepted into Michigan State University Law School with a full scholarship,” stated the release.

Kimball was awarded the Dean Charles H. King Scholarship from Michigan State University in 2012. The scholarship has a three-year value of $105,000.

The King Scholars program is available to up to 20 incoming students who have outstanding academic records and have performed well on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). Requirements include a university grade point average of 3.75 and an LSAT score of 162 or higher.

In addition to receiving the scholarship, those accepted to the King Scholars program participate in a variety of special events and courses that add breadth, depth and increased opportunities for professional development.

“The Dean Charles H. King Scholars Program recognizes and supports a select group of highly talented students whose application credentials suggest that they will become the academic leaders at MSU College of Law. King Scholars consistently form a core group of academic leaders in each class of the student body. Participation in the program helps ensure that King Scholars are well-prepared for careers in top law firms, judicial clerkship and other prominent positions,” states the description of the program.

Some positions held by King Scholar graduate

s include: mergers and acquisitions attorney with Ernst and Young in New York City; clerk for the Honorable David W. McKeague of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit; clerk for the Honorable Raymond W. Gruender of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit; and assistant U.S. attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s office in Tuscon, Arizona.

Through the program Kimball will receive one-on-one advising with the program director, special presentations during the first semester, assignment of a King Scholar student mentor and the online publication of the King Scholars senior writing seminar paper.

Kimball will also be privy to special courses including perspectives on law for King Scholars, King Scholars jurisprudence and King Scholars seminar specially geared toward those that are part of the exclusive program. In order to remain in the program Kimball will have to maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher and complete all academic courses and activities from entry through graduation.
