Softball team ends four-game skid with sweep of Posen
The Onaway High School softball team improved to 7-5 Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Posen. The Cardinals defeated the Vikings 6-1 and 11-1.
Emily Estep allowed an earned run on four hits and a walk, fanning seven in seven innings in the opener. The Cardinals made no errors and recorded four hits in the victory.
Lexi Szymoniak went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Devin Bristley also doubled, as the Cards broke open a scoreless tie with three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Posen scored a run in the sixth.
Emily Estep allowed an unearned run on four hits in the nightcap, striking out six and walking none in five innings. The Cards made just one error and totaled nine hits.
Bristley had a huge game driving in seven runs on a grand-slam homerun and a bases-loaded double. Emily Estep had two singles and a homerun, while Temara Lupu had two singles, two RBI, and two runs scored.
On Saturday, the Cardinals dropped a pair of games at a tournament at Birch Run, losing 4-2 to Breckinridge before falling 3-2 to Rogers City.
Emily Estep allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits, walking three and fanning eight in six innings in the first game. Onaway had only four hits and made four errors.
Szymoniak belted a two-run homer to put her team up 2-1 in the top of the fourth, but Breckinridge scored a pair in the bottom of the fourth before adding an insurance run in the sixth.

Bristley went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Emily Estep went 2-for-4, and Ashley LaLonde doubled and scored a run. Onaway trailed 3-0 before scoring a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, leaving the tying run on second.
Two days earlier, the Cardinals were swept in a home doubleheader against Rogers City, losing leads in the final inning of both contests. The Hurons won, 5-4 and 8-5.

The Cardinals were scheduled to travel to Bellaire yesterday (Thursday), play in a tournament at Petoskey on Saturday, and host Central Lake on Monday.
