Baseball team continues to roll, winning four of six

The Onaway High School baseball team finished second Saturday at a tournament at Newberry, defeating Brimley, 14-0, before falling to the host Indians, 2-0.

Chae Whitsitt and Tyler Welklin combined to pitch five innings of one-hit ball in the victory, walking four and fanning seven. The defense behind the duo was spotless as well, committing no errors.

The offense pounded 16 hits, with Justin Gedda going 4-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and three runs scored. Chris Cleaver went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, and Matt Tollini went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.

The game was scoreless after one inning, but the first 10 OHS hitters reached base in an 11-run Cardinal second. Onaway added two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth.

Tollini and Chae Whitsitt combined to allow just two hits and three walks, while fanning eight, in the loss. Neither run given up by the duo was earned, as the Cards made five errors in the contest.

“Tyler and Matt really pitched well for us,” said coach Mike Crull after the tourney. “You can see the hard work Tyler’s putting in pay off, and Matt is really starting to understand how to pitch and not just throw.”

Newberry scored a run in both the first and second innings, while the Red Birds managed just two hits – singles by Cleaver and Welklin.

Last Friday, the host Cardinals defeated Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian, winning 11-1 and 8-5. Because his opponent is a new program, Crull did not play his seniors in the twinbill.

“We thought we’d take a look at what next year’s team would look like,” he said.

Cody Whitsitt, Brad Boser, and Ray Self combined to allow just one hit, walk two, and fan 13 in the opener. The lone run given up was unearned, as the Cards made two errors.

Onaway recorded nine hits, led Welklin and Cody Whitsitt, each of whom went 2-for-3, and Cleaver, who had a double. OHS scored at least one run in all five innings it came to bat.

Cody Whitsitt, Tom Auger, and Frankie Ramos combined to allow three hits and nine walks, fanning four, in the nightcap. Onaway committed two errors in the game.

The offense totaled four hits. Auger had six stolen bases and scored three runs, while Cleaver stole five bases and scored three runs.

A day earlier, the Cardinals split a doubleheader with visiting Rogers City, winning game one, 5-0, before dropping game two, 9-1.

Tollini got the win in the opener, pitching six innings of shutout ball and allowing three hits and two walks while fanning six. Onaway made just one error in the game.

The cards tallied seven hits, led by Gedda, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, Cody Whitsitt, who wen

t 2-for-2 with a run scored, and Auger, who stole three bases and scored a pair of runs.

Chae Whitsitt, Tollini, and Cleaver combined to allow nine runs, only three of them earned, in the nightcap. The trio allowed six hits, walked five, and struck out seven.

Onaway made four errors and managed only three hits, two of them doubles by Cleaver and the other, a single, by Auger. Cody Whitsitt stole three bases in the loss.

The baseball team, now 9-2 on the year, was scheduled to travel to Bellaire yesterday (Thursday), play at a tournament at Atlanta on Saturday, and host Central Lake on Monday.
