Vikings complete the 20-0 season

Posen ran the tables on a perfect 20-0 regular season.

It was a perfect afternoon.

The Lady Viking girls basketball team was able to play their final regular season contest last Saturday at Alcona, after the game was rescheduled twice.

The game was very competitive through three quarters, providing a nice warm-up heading into this week’s district tournament.

Most important of all, the Vikings won their final regular season contest to become the first girls’ team in school history to win every regular season game. The final at Alcona High School was 66-45.

It’s the first time a varsity program at Posen High School has gone undefeated in the regular season since the 2004-05 boys’ basketball team ran the table from start to finish.

Korynn Hincka tallied 31 points to lead the Viking offense, but contributions came from every player who put her toe on the floor. Anna Couture put in eight while masterfully running the offense and six other players had at least six or more.

Karina Cole kept the Tigers in it with 22 points, including several second half 3-pointers to cut Posen’s eight point halftime lead to four. The score at that point was 36-32.

Ashley Meyers’ 3-pointer at the midway point of the third, provided a needed lift. That was followed shortly after by a steal by Bev Bednarski, who went the other way for a layup. Hincka provided five points in the closing minutes of the quarter. Posen was out in front, 49-36 heading into the fourth. They were in control the rest of the way, much the way they have handled the regular season.

“It’s a great feeling,” said head coach Karl Momrik. “For a league that’s taken its share of lump

s, it is great for the North Star League. I’m really happy about that.”

Alcona was 14-3 heading into the contest.

“It really means a lot,” said Hincka. “Our team has really worked hard this year, to reach a goal like this. It means a lot to the whole team.” More details of the game will appear in this week’s edition of the Advance.

The Vikings take on Hillman Wednesday in the district tournament. Game time at Onaway High School is at or around 7:30 p.m. It is game two of a playoff doubleheader. Rogers City received a bye and is awaiting the winner of the Onaway vs. Atlanta game.

The district final is Friday.
