The Rogers City Hurons varsity wrestling team went 3-1 Saturday at the Roscommon Duals defeating Grayling, Traverse City St. Francis and Onaway before losing to the host Bucks. The Hurons are now 10-5 on the season.

The day started with Grayling and a win 45-28. The Hurons then prevailed over Traverse City St. Francis 42-30 and Onaway 47-24 before losing to the home team 54-27.

Coach Pat Lamb was disappointed that his team only had four matches on the day, as Roscommon was unable to find a sixth team for the tournament. “I thought we wrestled pretty well. We gave some things up against Roscommon that you can’t do against a good team and that was the difference in the match. We were right there with them, I think we can compete with them; however, it wasn’t our day giving up weight classes like we were with Justin Saile on the sidelines for that match and giving up two weight classes,” said coach Lamb.

Against Onaway senior co-captain Caleb Pommerenke became a member of the century club when he defeated Casey Watson by technical fall and notched his 100th career win. Pommerenke finished the day 4-0 winning three matches by pin and one by technical fall as he earned the most valuable upper weight wrestler award.

Senior co-captain Evan Lamb was the only other Huron to go undefeated on the day as he was 4-0 at 135/140 and earned an award for fastest pin. Lamb pinned Onaway’s Bryan Brenner in 13 seconds to win that award.

Junior co-captain Jack Ryan was 3-1 on the day as were sophomores Cameron Urban, Jacob Sobeck and Austin Bober and junior Jared LaFleche.

Sophomore Blake Fessler was 2-2, junior Corey Schaedig was 2-1, senior Grant Popour was 1-2 and freshman Tommy Vogelheim was 1-3. Freshman Saile was 0-2 before being sidelined by an injury sustained in his first match of the day.

“Our kid

s wrestled extremely hard all day, I am proud of their efforts. Our sportsmanship was top notch. I am pleased with where we are at this point in the season. I am hopeful we can get some kids eligible and healthy back on the mat and make a run at the district and regional titles. The Rogers City wrestlers are coming out and giving everyone a full measure of their ability every time they are on the mat and as a coach I can’t ask for more than that,” said coach Lamb.

All of the Hurons dual match losses this season come to bigger schools as they have lost to Roscommon, Gaylord twice, Petoskey and Manistee.

The Hurons are at the halfway point of the regular season and hosted Sault Ste. Marie, Grayling and St. Ignace Wednesday (after press time) for parents’ night. The Hurons are at the Kingsley Duals Saturday.
