Newberry tops Huron girls, 43-29

The Newberry High School girls’ basketball tam came away a 43-29 winner over the Hurons Friday (Jan. 4). After Newberry went out to a 13-0 lead after the first quarter, the Hurons came back to cut into the lead. 

Logan Fleming got the Hurons’ first points of the game when she had a steal and a layup at the 7:32 mark of the second quarter. Two more baskets by Fleming and another steal off the press and a bucket from Courtney Streich cut the lead to 19-14. Then sophomore center Cassidy Purgiel’f free-throw made it 19-15.

The Hurons would close to within two at 29-27 after two more steals and layups from Fleming, but then Newberry reeled off the next 10 points to put the game away. 

Fleming led the team with 12 points while Brooklyn Idalski had five points. 

The Hurons host Alcona Monday.
