New members join RC school board; Marx back as president

Superintendent Katy Makowski called the Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education meeting to order Monday for their organizational meeting and the first order of business was swearing in two new board members elected to six-year terms. Deedra Haselhuhn and Cory Budnick were officially sworn in and sat around the table for their first meeting Monday night.

Following the roll call, Pledge of Allegiance and approval of minutes, Makowski opened the floor for nominations for president. Bryan Hall nominated Mike Marx for the position and his motion was seconded by John Krajenta, no other nominations were given and Marx was unanimously selected for the position and took over the meeting.

Hall then nominated Lee Gapczynski for vice president and Krajenta again seconded. Gapczynski was the only nomination for the seat and will serve the board in that capacity for the year. Hall was elected as the treasurer and Krajenta as the secretary. Budnick will serve as the assistant treasurer/secretary to the board.

THE FIRST order of business was an opportunity for guests to speak. Paula Streich and Kathy LaLonde, representing the Rogers City Educators Association, thanked the board for their service. Karl Grambau representing the Rogers City Education Support Personnel followed as they gave the board gifts of appreciation in recognition of school board month. Makowski then presented each member with a certificate from the Michigan Association of School Boards.

The board then appointed Marx to negotiate a one-year contract extension with Makowski that will bring her contract to June 30, 2016 after a favorable evaluation to close out 2012.
