Summer festival set for Sunday in Metz

by Peter Jakey, Managing Editor

The St. Dominic Church Summer Festival, which includes the popular chicken barbecue, is scheduled for Sunday from noon to 5:30 p.m. The festival, which started more than 25 years ago to raise money for the renovation of the church in Metz, raised $11,649 in 2010 and may have been one of the most successful ever, according to organizers. This will be the sixth year of the Classic and Vintage Show, featuring cars, trucks, motorcycles, tractors, snowmobiles and antiques.

There isn?t much that?s different, according to Sister Rita Epple, but as the old clich? goes, ?if it ain?t broke don?t fix it.? The barbecue dinner certainly doesn?t need fixing; however, there?s lots of fixings, including baked beans, cole slaw, macaroni salad, bread, desserts, and all are homemade. Last year, 540 meals were served. Adult prices are $10 per person and $9 for a petite portion. The children?s meal is $4. ANOTHER STAPLE of the event is the ?extens

ive Chinese raffle? highlighting new and locally handcrafted items. There?s also a raffle, which includes $500 jackpot and a $100 gas card.

Plus, the Happy Wanderers will fill the tiny village with its usual brand of lively polka music. The band will play from 1 to 5 p.m. The kids? games are always a popular attraction among the young people, plus there?s a bake sale that wsells out fairly quickly. Money raised this year will go toward defraying the cost of the church?s winter heating bills. Over the last quarter-of-a-century, projects have included a $150,000 renovation of the century-old parish hall.

The festival is conducted on the St. Dominic Church grounds, 9269 County Road 441.
