Another perfect weekend for boat show

by Peter Jakey, Managing Editor

A lot of the success involving the annual Presque Isle Harbor Wooden Boat show is dependent upon the weather. So for in June, there have been a lot more bad stretches than good.

Luckily, the show was sandwiched between the nicest days of the last 10. ?We had two perfect days for the Friday boat ride and the Saturday show,? said chairman Dave Kowalski. ?I still can?t believe we had two perfect days for the boat show, it was really neat.? He can only remember there being rain twice in almost two decades. According to the head count at the road leading to the harbor area, there were nearly 2,000 people on hand to view the more than 50 registered boats.

The arts and crafts booths were up this year with 35 vendors showing off their wares. While the exact number of model boats was unavailable, Kowalski said there was a lot more with a gentleman from Bay City bringing in new displays and ?creating a lot more interest. He?s taking it over next year.?

On Friday, 15 boats were part of the Grand Lake cruise, and the party got even bigger at Presque Isle Lodge later that night with 250 participants and sponsors in attendance. ?We always have positive remarks about the event,? said Kowalski. ?There?s no other show like it.?

And next year?s 20th anniversary show is expected to be the biggest and best one ever. The 2011 winners are as follows: Best transom name: The Bolt, a 1931 Century Thunderbolt, owner Jackie Browning. Peoples? choice: Blu By U, owner Russ and Tammy Arrand, Chris-Craft, 22-foot Utility. Skippers? choice: Mary E, owner Leslie Tischer, 1950 Chris-Craft 19 foot.
