All-State awards announced

With the season finished, post season awards have been given out to six Onaway Cardinal softball players.

Sophomore pitcher Emily Estep earned first team all-state honors as a pitcher. Emily Estep went 17-4 on the mound this season. She allowed just 12 earned runs in 123 1/3 innings of work. She registered 171 strikeouts to just 21 walks and allowed just 57 hits on the season. She never committed an error on the mound and allowed just 29 total runs all season.

Emily also hit .418 with six home runs, ten doubles and four triples. She had 33 hits and 28 RBI and tied a school record with 25 walks. Emily also scored 39 runs for the Cardinals. In addition to earning all-state honors she also earned all-region, all-district and first-team all-conference honors for her efforts this season. ?Her awards are well deserved. Emily worked very hard this season and off-season,? said coach Jodi Brewbaker, who coached the team to its fifth straight district title as they went 28-4 on the season.

Sophomore catcher Sam Brasseur earned honorable mention all-state honors. She committed only six errors behind the plate this season while she batted .383, belting out 31 hits including 11 doubles and one triple and driving in 20 runs. Brasseur also earned all-region, all-district and first team all-conference honors. ?It was the second year in a row Sam was honored and she really works hard behind the plate,? said coach Brewbaker.

Junior first baseman Molly Cleaver was the final Cardinal to land a spot on the honorable mention all state team as she committed just two errors in 145 attempts. Cleaver hit .410 this season with 32 hits including 13 doubles and 10 homeruns. Cleaver walked 20 times and belted 30 RBI. Cleaver was also all-region, all-district and all-conference first team. ?This is the first year Molly has earned all-state honors and she was just one homerun from a school record in a single season, a record held by her

sister Dani Cleaver,? said coach Brewbaker.

ALONG WITH Emily Estep, Brasseur and Cleaver, centerfielder Sam Freel and second baseman Megan Estep also earned all-district, all-region and first team all-conference honors.

Freel committed just two errors in 14 attempts and hit .338 from the nine spot. She scored 17 runs and had 27 hits including four doubles and two triples. Freel also drove in 18 runs.

Megan Estep committed just six errors on 72 attempts and batted .375 for the Cardinals this season. She scored 37 runs and drove in 20. She belted 36 hits including six doubles and two home runs.

AUTUMN HALL, who played both shortstop and third base for the Cardinals, also earned first team all-conference honors as she batted .303 with 21 runs scored, 23 hits, 15 RBI, eight doubles and one triple. Hall committed just five errors in 46 attempts.
