School to look for new superintendent

by Peter Jakey, Managing Editor

After much thought and consideration, Rogers City Area Schools? superintendent/principal Jamie Huber told his staff April 27 he was accepting an administrative position with the Cheboygan-Otsego-Presque Isle Educational Service District (COP ESD).

Huber said his last day with the district would be June 30. The board scheduled a special meeting Friday to discuss Huber?s resignation. President Mike Marx declined to comment, until after the resignation is formally acted on. ?Please know that while I am excited about the opportunity to serve our students, along with other districts, throughout the ESD,? he stated in the mass e-mail to staff. ?It is bittersweet in that I will not be working directly with each of you as I have throughout the past four years.?

He started in Rogers City as the secondary principal in the fall of 2007, before being asked to assume the superintendent duties in November 2008. He went through the interview process before officially being hired as superintendent/secondary principal. His first day with the new job titles was July 1, 2009. The district has had six superintendents in 10 years.

?The decision certainly wasn?t because I?m unhappy with the district, or I wanted to be in a different district, because that certainly didn?t enter into my mind at all. ?It isn?t about anything other than a unique opportunity that this position presented. Being as connected as I have been, and dedicated to this district as I have been over the last four years, made it an extremely difficult decision for me, and one I didn?t take

lightly.? His current salary of $87,900 a year, will be about the same. ?I haven?t made too many career decisions based on money,? said Huber. The position within the COP is becoming available with an upcoming retirement this summer.

Huber will be involved in professional development for the teachers in the 10 districts, school improvement work and technology. The COP is located in Indian River. The COP ESD supports the local districts. ?It is a direct support mechanism to provide services to teachers regarding training, technology, and to fill and support those needs, that local districts cannot.

Huber?s e-mail states there remains a lot of work that must be focused upon and done between now and June 30. ?As we enter these busy last few weeks of the school year…,? he stated. ?There are also a wide and seemingly endless number of year-end activities, in addition to the ongoing budget challenges we are all facing.?
