Boosters sponsor awards night for Huron athletes

Emily Marx and Jesse Wilbert came away with the top awards as female and male athletes of the year for Rogers City High School (RCHS) in last week?s awards banquet. The evening, sponsored by the Huron Athletic Boosters honored athletes from each of the 11 varsity sports offered at RCHS.

Marx, a catcher on the softball team, and a libero on the volleyball team, is the daughter of Scott and Mary Marx. She earned the Dan Rose Award as female athlete of the year. Wibert, the son of Edward and Shannon Wilbert, quarterbacked the football team, started at guard on the three-time district basketball team, and is centerfielder for the baseball squad. He was awarded the Joseph A. Valentin Award.

The award for the top scholar athletes, the James Quinn Award, were earned by Jordan Bellmore and Leilani Kortman, while Katie Darga earned the Judy Paradise Award as top senior athlete.

Dr. Jay and Deb Schuiteman were honored with the John Geyer Award, given annually to someone who has volunteered their effort and energy to help the athletic program. They were instrumental in reorganizing and revitalizing the boosters over the past few years.

Other major award winners included: Travis Fleis who was awarded the Allan Dagner Award and Scholarship for the senior with a kind hearted nature and love of the sport; Wilbert, who won the Mark Smolinski Award as the football player with dedication on and off the field; Linnea Brege and Meagan Koss, winners of the JoLen Flewelling Award given to a junior softball player with most enthusiasm and dedication; Andrew Selke, winner of the Jack Florip Award given to the top freshman wrestler; and Raelyn Hoeft and Cynthia Kerr, winners of the Chuck Altman Award as freshman track athletes of the year.

tball; Darga and Robert Dietlin for bowling; Zach Sobeck for football; Bailey Andrzejewski and Joe Sobeck in cross country; Brege and Amanda Smolinski in volleyball, Joe Sobeck and Kortman for track; Devin Pommerenke in wrestling; and Rebecca Talaske for girls? basketball.

Most improved winners were: Chad Karsten in boys? basketball; Alisandria Haselhuhn and Zach Hazel for bowling; Chris Pflug in football; Hilary Viegelahn, Zach Belland and Colton Fessler for cross country; Lindsey Claus in volleyball; Andrzejewski and Andrew Freel for track; Noah Sobeck in wrestling; and Alev Ibis for girls? basketball.

Awards for baseball, softball and golf will be awarded after the season concludes. Honored as sports booster of the year was Glen?s Market of Rogers City. Karl Grambau served as master of ceremonies while coaches for each sport presented awards.
