Regular season ends with Huron loss at Rudyard

Rogers City couldn?t hold on to an early lead last Friday as it dropped its 20th game in a row to end the regular season. The Hurons lost 55-38 in Rudyard in the last game played before the district game scheduled for Wednesday (after press time). Senior captain Shelby Schleben got the scoring going with a two-pointer and a three-pointer, both off assists by junior guard Kelleigh Lamb. Then a rebound and hoop from sophomore center Rebecca Meredith and a free throw by Lamb gave the Hurons an 8-4 lead with 3:42 left in the first quarter.

Then Rudyard went to work reeling off the next 15 points, including eight from Rudyard sophomore guard Leah Jarvie, who led all scorers with 20 points. The run came to an end after Lamb hit a layup, assisted by a fine cross-court pass from sophomore guard Brooklyn Idalski. THE HURONS had a short run midway through the second quarter. d to 23-17 with 5:10 left in the second quarter.

But that would end the scoring for the Hurons as Rudyard led at halftime 26-17. Then a 9-0 run to start the third quarter built the lead to 35-17 before a short banker by Talaske with 4:36 left in the third quarter. Schleben started the fourth quarter with a triple from the left wing, but that would be the only Huron points in the first four minutes of the quarter. Schleben scored 10 points, snared six rebounds and had five steals in the contest. Talaske scored nine points, had two assists and a steal while Claus had eight points on 4-of-6 from the field.

Meredith led the team with 10 rebounds and scored four points while Idalski had four assists, Lamb had five points, three assists and seven rebounds in the final regular season game. THE JUNIOR varsity Hurons ended its season with a 49-35 loss to Rudyard. Rogers City trailed 11-7 after one quarter and 27-16 at halftime. An effective press in the fourth quarter gave the junior varsity Hurons a 14-11 edge in the fourth quarter, but not enough to close the gap. Courtney Streich had 14 points and Megan Quaine added six points for the Hurons. Rogers City was scheduled to play Gaylord St. Mary Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Onaway district.
