Posen girls wrap up NSL championship

Five Posen players scored in double figures in a lopsided road win at Atlanta. The Viking (17-1, 13-0) girls? basketball team, who had clinched an outright North Star League title five nights before, scored the first 17 points of the game and had the running clock the entire second half in an 81-12 win. For head coach Karl Momrik and company, it?s the Vikings? ninth straight win. The contest was rescheduled to Tuesday, after a cancellation Monday, but the girls got back to Posen in plenty of time to cheer the boys to victory.

The Vikings outscored Atlanta 25-3 in the second quarter to take a 44-8 halftime lead, and skunked the home team in the third quarter by scoring all 17 points. The score at that point was 61-8. ?The unique thing about the win is we didn?t have a single foul,? said Momrik. ?That?s very unusual.? Korynn Hincka was the leading scorer with 14 points and eight blocks; LeAnn Strzelecki had 12 points and seven steals; Lindsey Bartz had 12 points and 11 rebounds; Lindsay Ponik12 points; Ashley Meyers 10; Anna Couture eight points, eight assists; Emily Delekta eight points. Every player scored in the contest.

The Vikings will look to wrap up their second undefeated conference season in three years when they host Hillman. It?s the final home tilt on ?parents? night? and ?Pack the House Night,? with anyone wearing school colors getting in for a buck. Momrik said the girls are taking care of the basketball with only 29 turnovers in the last three games. ?What?s really good about our team right now is that we?ve got nine kids, and teams have played kids 30 to 32 minutes a game, we haven?t come anywhere near that with our team,? the coach said. ?Our bench has played so much this year, I think we are going to have one of the freshest teams come tournament time,? which starts in 11 days in Hillman. The Vikings play the first game of a tournament doubleheader at 6 p.m. against Fairview.

THE VIKINGS captured the league title with a convincing 69-36 win

over Hale last Thursday. A great start put the game in the win column for the Vikings as they scored 15 of the game?s first 17 points. Coach Momrik?s full-court press set up easy opportunities and strong offensive rebounding led to a 15-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Hincka scored all of her 20 points in the first three quarters. Couture had 11, Ponik added 10 and Paige Lewandowski scored nine points in the win. All nine players played significant roles and eight of them scored in the game. ?It is great to have a team that goes nine deep and to have each of them contributing something,? said Momrik.

The junior varsity took a 46-14 win over Hale, leading 29-7 at halftime and 37-7 at the end of the third quarter. Bev Bednarski?s 18 points and Elizabeth Mulka?s 10 points were tops for the team.
